REVIVE showcases the vibrant art of Chinese opera. Chinese opera is a form of theatre that combines music, vocal performances, dance, and acrobatics. Through immigration, this form of theatre was brought overseas to Alberta and acted as an important source of social capital to Chinese settlers (Cheung, 2013). For most young Canadian Asians, the Chinese Opera serves as a respected but distant art form from due to the limited transmission to the next generation.

The REVIVE journey follows three Canadian-born Asian artists as they immerse themselves in different aspect of the art form and together share their interpretation of Chinese opera through the characters from the iconic myth The Legend of the White Snake. Calgary makeup artist Liz Lai and milliner Carrie Yap present six characters that showcase traditional and contemporary techniques unique to their own medium. Photographer Danny Luong captured the year long journey of discovery and exploration and along with a team of photographers provides a narrative on reconnecting to the Chinese opera community through a series of photographs
